Its colour is pale yellow. Other isomers with the formula ClC6H4NO2 include 2-nitrochlorobenzene and 3-nitrochlorobenzene.

Nitration of chlorobenzene gives a mixture of ~ 33% of o-nitrochlorobenzene and ~66% of p-nitrochlorobenzene. The mixture cannot be separated by distillation alone because the boiling points are very close together. However, careful fractionation through an efficient column yields a first fraction enriched in the p-nitrochlorobenzene, and the last fraction enriched in the o-nitrochlorobenzene.

Uses:

Intermediates for Dyes, Pigments, Pharmaceuticals (Paracetamol, Phenacetin etc.), Pesticides, Agro chemicals, Polymer and Rubber Chemicals.

It is used as a raw material in the preparation of 4-nitrodiphenylamine, 4-chloroaninline and (4-[(4-aminobenzene)sulfonyl]aniline). It serves as a common antioxidant, which is found in rubber.
